Where to Start?

Some of those who visit this site may know that I have accepted a position at Hope Reformed Church in Clifton, NJ. Though I will not be ordained until next Spring – Lord willing – the congregation, consistory and classis have been so moved to have me as their minister. But the question is for the first time preacher, “Where do you start preaching?” Do I begin with a general series on what the church is as it pertains to my ministry at the church? Do I start with a series on the basics of Christian living? Do I follow the lectionary, of which would be starting through Galatians?

Well, I have settled on using the month of July, and maybe a week or two, into August – or maybe all of August as well, to go through I John. And it is my hope that this Blog site will be used as a forum to build upon the Sunday sermon. Certainly, not everything can be said in a few moments on a Sunday morning. So here I will discuss some of the intricacies of the text, some of the background, etc – I attempted to do this with Psalm 30, but had to focus my attention on other things.

Again, I appreciate all and any feedback from those who have stumbled upon this site. My prayer is that this site will truly be used for the Glory of God and the edification of the Church.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Marks of the Church, the Reformed church has always confessed that there are 3 Marks that make a church a church. Those three are: right preaching/teaching of the Scriptures, right administration of the Sacraments, and right administration of discipline. (more…)

Unfortunately, things came up as I was preparing for graduation and moving that prohibited me from posting while my thought were fresh, but I will try to make some comments that are in line with the comments I have already made.
It is exciting that the RCA’s leadership is pressing the denomination to plant churches and revitalize existing churches. It is great that the RCA is excited about participating in the Missio Dei (Mission of God). These are exciting times when a denomination, or individual church for that matter, starts to press forward in mission. I really do mean these statements; there is no sarcasm. For some one with very optimistic eschatology, it is great when churches are intentionally seeking to transform communities through the proclamation of the gospel in word and deed. (more…)
