As I have been reading the book of Judges again, I am reminded of a grave error which I have heared propogated by some Christians and I am sure you have too.  When making a decision, or trying to discern the will of God for one’s life I have heard, “I am putting out the fleece” as if this were a possitive example of what a Christian is to do.  But if one is to read the story of Gideon closer, they would find that Gideon was actually showing his great unbelief and distrust in the word of God and God himself by putting out his fleece.  This is an example of what not to do; this passage is showing the sinfulness of the people, even those who would be leaders in Israel.

Instead, we are told to trust every word that comes from the mouth of God, not put out our fleece and wait.  Gideon was given clear assurace by the very mouth of God, but he did not believe it thus he put out his fleece.  We are given clear words in the pages of Scripture.  So as one’s life conforms to the words of the Scriptures, they can be assured that they are living in the will of God.  The will of God for one’s life is no mystery; God has revealed His will for His people, the question is if we will obey.  This surely takes more faith then testing God by waiting for a supernatural sign.

“Lord give us hearts to obey Your will as You have graciously revealed in Your Word.  Amen”
