Sometimes it is hard to make decisions as Christians, especially those who believe the Bible is THE authority of both faith and practice.  Often times when looking to the Bible for guidance we quickly move to a specific or detailed instruction, not taking the time to check context or see how it fits into the whole of God’s Word.  I put together a worksheet on moving from the more broad commands of Scripture to the more specific for an ethics seminar I am leading and thought I might share it.  Note: it is made specifically for the topic of Christian obedience to human authority, but the structure could be used for other issues as well.

With all this talk of our president and others of the need for transparency one would think that all governmental agency would follow suit.   Well it might be demanded of our Federal Reserve through legislation.  See video below:

Shouldn’t we know where our trillions of dollars are going?

In writing this I realize the strength of the word used: slave.  It is a word that leaves a sour taste in many mouths.  Yet, it is because of our common reaction to this word that makes it all the more fitting for our present situation.   Continue Reading »

My God From the Womb

David writes:

“Yet you brought me out of the womb;

you made me feel secure on my mother’s breast.

From birth I was cast on you;

from my mother’s womb you have been my God.” (Psalm 22:9-10, TNIV, emphasis mine)

Surely, David is here resting in the fact that God is faithful to the covenant He has made with His people.  That is, He has promised to be God of us and our children.  How else could David had made such a confession of faith in the LORD prior to his birth?  These words of David are great words of comfort for all those born and baptized into covenant with our God.  And they speak to those who want to keep children at the margins of the church until they make a profession of faith (as if that is any more of an assurance of true faith).  We are the LORD’s even in our mother’s womb, may the church recognize those the LORD already has.

This book by Simon Chan has been an excellent and thought provoking read.  I would encourage all those who are interested in liturgics to read through it.  I will be posting quotes and hopefully some thoughts along the way.  For an introduction to Chan click here.i

…But I guess I was wrong.  Really, wasn’t that what we were told?  We need to do something NOW to make things better in our country.  All the urgency put into passing this “stimulus” package in the past month for what? Unprecedented governmental spending for what?  Psuedo-Socialism for what?  The Fed now saying that things are going to get more bleak.  So much for the promises from Washington.

Oh yeah, and we (and our children and our children’s children) are the one’s who are going to pay (the “we” referring to the common American outside of Washington).  Though, it is comforting to know that after April 1 I will be helping someone have health insurance every time I light up my pipe (dripping with sarcasm here).

Here is a link to an article concerning the rising number of suicides in the Army, and this is only among those actively serving.  I often wonder how supposed pro-life Christians have so easily bought into turning a blind eye and even promoting the necessity of war, at least those America is fighting (we condemn others).  Oh yes, pro-life only means pro-babies, I forgot.

Yes We Will….

…Be Disappointed!!!!

Pastorally, the HOPE that is propagated around the inauguration of our 44th president is alarming.  Man alone cannot provide the hope that we hear all around us.  President Obama will not be able to live up to the expectations that we have placed upon him and he has placed upon himself.  And no human can or will ever be able to.  May God forgive us for putting our faith in man.   Thus, what follows when extreme “highs” are not met?  When the dreams are dashed?  Great despair.  God have mercy on us when misplacing our hope.
